Jenny BachBeginning Organic Beekeeping is a 5-week course for commercial and backyard farmers and anyone interested in learning to keep bees organically, using natural and biodynamic principles. Course instructors Jennifer Bach of Bee Love Apiaries and Richard Spiegel, founder of Volcano Island Honey Co., will offer both classroom and hands-on instruction. $300 includes start-up equipment. This class runs from September 7 – October 5. Classes will be held on Saturdays, from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm at Crystal Dew Farms and Bee Love Apiaries.

Topics will Include:

  • The Bees: History of Honeybees and Their Relationship with Humans, and Meet the Bees, Opening a Hive Demo
  • Beginning Beekeeping: The Hive, Tools of the Trade, Beekeeping in Hawaii, Colony Dynamics, Producing Honey
  • Setting Up: Obtaining Hives, Top Bar Hives, Pollination Hives, Bees and Queens, Design and Management of Bee Yards, Constructing Hives
  • Bee Problems and Solutions: Honey Bee Disorders, Diseases, Pests, IPM (with UH Manoa Honeybee Research Team)
  • The Swarm: Swarm Dynamics, Catching Swarms, Back Yard Beekeeping, Exploration of Different Hives such as the Top-Bar Hive
  • Keeping it Natural: Holistic Beekeeping, Biodynamic Standards, Organic Standards
  • Creating Pollinator Habitat and Forage Areas
